Sunday 22nd saw Shady Records artist, Yelawolf, hit the stage at Tavastia in Helsinki - the last date on the European leg of his tour. He sat down with us to discuss the new album - Love Story, the tour, Paris, working with Eminem, how he spends his down-time and other artists he's currently listening to and looking forward to hearing more from, as well as much more.
The show was opened up by lively Finnish hip-hop artist, Gettomasa, who worked through a number of up-beat tracks with his DJ supporting. I can't comment on his lyrical ability (my Finnish skills aren't quite that good yet), but he worked the stage and crowd well and certainly got the crowd warmed up for the main act.
If I'm honest, I hadn't really followed Yelawolf for some time. I do like a fair bit of his old stuff and had heard the new album a few times, but the only track I ever really hear regularly is the Shady BET cypher from a few years back. I re-visited the new album before the gig, but purposely avoided watching any live material.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the live performance. I'd go so far as to say, it's actually a gig I'd have paid money to see.
By the time Yelawolf hit the stage the venue was packed. Packed to the point where people were 3-4 deep through the door and in to the bar.
